Serge Lifar the ballet master and director of the Paris Opera Ballet, faces accusations of collaborating with the Nazis. Allegations suggest he managed performances for the Germans, personally gave Hitler a tour of the Grand Opera, and even sent a greeting card to German forces in Kyiv. As interrogations drag on for a year, questions arise: How did this Kyiv-born dancer end up on trial in Paris, and did he truly aid the enemy? Through the story of Serge Lifar, the documentary will highlight why difficult political times demand complex and responsible decisions. Of Ukrainian descent, Serge Lifar was forced to emigrate due to the impossibility of realizing his creative ambitions. By examining his unpublished diary, documents, and archival materials, we can better understand the artist's work, based on facts and the emotional impressions of the dancer himself—his struggle for self-expression. The film will be shot in Ukraine and France, introducing audience to Lifar’s students and successors. The musical elements of the film will immerse audiences in the dramatic periods of the 20th century and showcase the artist's most brilliant ballet roles.
