Vele is 19 years old and all she wants is to learn how to read and write – to keep up with her seven-year-old daughter. After the endless years of the Liberian civil war, her ability to sign her own name means the next big step towards independence – away from the painful past, into a brighter future.
Nataliia Ponomariv is a Ukrainian journalist, television presenter, and documentary filmmaker. In her work, she explores Ukrainian history, social transformations, and questions of responsibility, moral choice, and leadership.
In 2025, Ponomariv directed and co-wrote the documentary Sheptytskyi: Between War and Faith, produced by Prosto Production for Suspilne. The film focuses on Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi and the moral choices he faced amid the confrontation between the Nazi and Soviet totalitarian regimes.
One of the central themes of her work is the individual faced with difficult choices. While working on Sheptytskyi: Between War and Faith, the director sought to portray not a canonical image of a historical figure, but a living person who had to make difficult decisions under extraordinary circumstances.
